The Comic that got me Hooked! Part: 1

The Comic that got me Hooked!

We would go over to my Grandparents house for most holidays and like kids do they either bring toys, books, drawing stuff or some kind of video game to pass the time. During this time this is a chance for Mothers & Fathers and Aunts & Uncles to catch up and talk, meanwhile this is an opportunity for cousins to see each other and have fun or make some trouble (we did both).

One particular gathering my cousin and I took a walk I remember the sun had set early so it may have been Thanksgiving or Christmas. We had walked about a mile and half to a 7-11 convenience store. Typically we would stop into places like this and browse the magazine rack, my cousin being a couple years older would tend to look at the latest issues of Popular Science or Popular Mechanics and I would go to the comics. Truthfully we would go through all the magazines picking up on the latest trends or entertainment.

So, I'm browsing the different comic covers and to be honest I can't remember any of the other covers, however one stood out amongst all the others, it was of Silver Surfer (a character I hadn't heard much of, if at all! Up to this point.) being held up by the neck of some purple skinned villain. This was not what called my interest but the fact all the heroes we know and love spread around the background DEAD! At this point in my life I was aware of the age old adage 'Never judge a book by it's cover.' so opened the pages to investigate and what did I discover? That in fact our heroes WERE falling to this purple powerhouse!

Who was this villain? Why was he so powerful? and Why were our heroes falling like flies?

Well, I knew I had to have it so I could spend more time trying to solve these mysteries.  Now this story is known by many and the questions I asked about this particular story arc can be answered and will only scratch the surface of what makes this comic Awesome!

Upon reading this comic I had purchased I discovered that I needed to delve further back into the chronology of Silver Surfer to get the full story.

Around this time I frequently visited family in Standale/Walker living not far off of Lake Michigan drive, one day noticed a comic shop named D&B Comics, which I believe was the initials of the comic owners, located in a strip plaza lining the south side of Lake Michigan drive. Taking note that it wasn't to far from where I was staying I made it a point to visit.

Once I had time to slip away I ventured off to see what I could discover at this treasure trove of pulp. What I discovered upon entering was a world of heroes spread around the room on racks and filed in boxes. Comics pegged wall-to-wall from there plastic covers. In the back of the shop was a particle board wall that partitioned the front of the story from the back with a hand painted image of Wolverine (a character I knew of but only form the X-men cartoon that I would regularly watch on Saturdays while eating Gino's Pizza).

I explored the shop finding many back issues to the Silver Surfer story that had intrigued me so much, in fact I found more then I could afford! So, purchasing a few I brought them back home with me and plummeted with zeal into the story.

I was slowly working my way to the beginning and along the way the story only hinted at what was to come and was actually happening in the story I would not know until the next time I visited the comic shop!

Thanks for reading! Comment or ask a Question and I'll see you next week!
