Gay Spider-man in Movies

Gay Spider-man in Movies

I was reading about how they may make Spider-man gay in the new movies. Commenters wrote how it was wrong on the bases that he was not gay in the comics, which I understand.

However this is the second incarnation of Spider-Man in the movies and they didn't make him gay in the first installation.

So what does it matter if he is gay the second time around?

Recently we have heard about some people arguing against Johnny Depp's interpretation of Tonto in the recent Lone Ranger movie. Producers, Directors and Actors are artists and they experiment with style, content and substance to bring us a unique experience, not a carbon copy of a previous work but sometimes their own impression of the source material however abstract.

We relate to these characters in our own way and sometimes because of that we may be a bit deeply involved and so it strikes at ourselves when someone changes them.

Hollywood has always been into marketing their products to an extended demographic, often times this comes in the form of a change in skin color, gender or in this case a change in sexual orientation.

I also read that it would be more acceptable to have a gay superhero in movies if that character was originally gay, though most mainstream audiences probably wouldn't go out to see it and so any gay character would be delegated to a second tier role in any other type of film. Gay representation is still a niche market and gay characters are cliche at best. Sexual orientation of a character or a real person is not what defines their principles and that is why we connect with superheros to begin with, because they represent principles that we see in ourselves or would like too appealing to our higher ideals of society. So maybe to get the point across that we all have in common a higher sense of responsibility maybe a high profile character like Spider-man should be gay so we can sort out what our real priorities are and that is that we all want to make our lives a better place.

So are my thoughts on this subject, one more thing,
the comments against this change have all been focused on depicting Spider-man as gay verses really the most interesting change which is changing Maryjane into a boy! I don't know any boys named Maryjane so I don't know how they will explain that one.

Then again Johnny Cash sung a song about a boy named Sue so I guess anything can happen.
